In this game, Dr. Robotnik steals one of the Chaos Emeralds, causing the others to become imbalanced and making South Island start sinking.
Sonic Chaos is the first game in the franchise to feature Tails as a playable character.
In Japan, this game is known as Sonic & Tails, while in Europe it is known as Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos.
Final Considerations – Analyzing the Game as a Whole
Graphics and UI
As an 8-bit game, it has significant graphical limitations. But despite that, I like the composition of the levels—they’re quite creative.
The bosses are kind of ugly, I won’t lie! hahahaha But I think they have their own charm.
For me, the highlight is Sonic’s and Tails’ animations. They’re very detailed, which is impressive.
Soundtrack and Sound Effects
All the music in this game is nostalgic for me, and I like every track without exception!
I know it’s hard to evaluate games that bring us so many good memories, but even trying to put my feelings aside, I can’t see the soundtrack as anything other than well made.
The only song that’s not quite as exciting is the one from the Sleeping Egg stage. But even then, it’s not bad.
Special mention goes to the music in the final stage (Electric Egg), which combines a sense of “final moments” with tension.
Gameplay
I have a very special relationship with Sonic Chaos. It was one of the first games I played in my life, around 1996. However, I only managed to beat it in the early 2000s.
And that’s why Tails became such a symbolic character for me, he ended up becoming my first video game–themed tattoo. <3
The stages are easy, but the real challenge is collecting the Chaos Emeralds. And I’ll say upfront: I’ve never been able to get the last one. I find the gameplay in this final stage (basically, you control Sonic through pipes, guiding him along the correct path) very confusing, and I admit I’ve never had the patience to keep playing until I figured it out.
The only thing I find annoying is adapting to the game’s physics, because I think the characters feel too “light”. Since I usually revisit the game at intervals of about two years, I always need a little time to readjust.
One of the factors that makes the game’s difficulty low is how easy it is to accumulate lives and continues. There was a lack of balance in this aspect.
When playing as Tails, you won’t need to collect the Chaos Emeralds. This makes him a good starting point for new players (especially children) who are adapting to the Sonic franchise.
Replayability and Game Retention
This is certainly one of my favorite games, not only because I think it’s a good game (and I do!), but because it has a special place in my heart.
From time to time, I always relive the excitement of playing it again.
For those who have never played it and are used to the Sonic games from the Mega Drive, it will certainly feel like a different experience, since the stages are shorter and the difficulty is much more forgiving. However, it is still an exciting experience.
