Get the Girl! (PC)

Technical Information

Developer: Jab Software
Publisher: Jab Software
Release Date: 1993

The game was released for Windows 3.x.
A dating sim from the early ’90s, where you talk to virtual girls and aim to go out with one of them in real life.
Filled with good humor, the game does a good job of portraying how many games in the ’90s were developed in someone’s basement.

Final Thoughts – Analyzing the Game as a Whole

Graphics and UI

The graphics are quite rough, even for a game from 1993. Some photos were used, but your character has a cartoonish avatar. It’s an odd combination.
The loading screen has some pretty ugly artwork and animation.

The game is visually easy to understand, but aesthetically horrible.
During the loading screen of Act 2, you can notice that the title isn’t even centered! hahaha
In some dialogues, there’s no space between the period and the next letter. When you want to send a message, you have to click on your character’s avatar instead of a “Send” button. I found this kind of strange and not very intuitive.

Soundtrack and Sound Effects

The game uses famous songs in MIDI format (including The Heat Is On from the movie Beverly Hills Cop hahaha) and has some pretty rough sound effects.

Gameplay

It’s not necessary to be a game designer to notice the amateur level of this game, even considering its age. I don’t know if I like that, but to me, it brings back a strong ’90s vibe, because at that time it was common to find games with this kind of feel. For me, it’s quite nostalgic!

Before starting the game, you choose a character. Each character has a mini biography.
Each virtual girl has a different personality, which affects your score gain or loss depending on how the dialogue progresses. They’re not predictable, and you’ll have to rely on trial and error to figure out what pleases or displeases each one.

The conversations are generally more comedic than sexual.
The dash of humor creates a relaxed atmosphere, and I’m sure you’ll want to chat with some girls just for fun!

Unfortunately, the game doesn’t have much variety in questions, but since each character reacts differently, your score will change even if you choose the same answers.

Replayability and Game Retention

Despite being rough around the edges, the game is quite funny and challenging. I felt motivated to go as far as possible.
If you mess up, you can try again with the same character and answers — which makes it easier to convince a girl to go out with you — or simply try a new strategy with another character.

Another positive point: it’s super casual and works great for killing time.
